The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is a New York-based national nonprofit devoted to the teaching, learning and love of American history. Gilder Lehrman draws on top scholars, an unparalleled collection of original historical documents, and a national network of Affiliate Schools to create and provide a broad range of innovative resources, help new generations of students learn about American history in a way that is engaging and memorable, and promote critical thinking and excellent writing.

The Institute is currently seeking an experienced and dynamic Director to lead the Exhibitions and Public Programs department and oversee its various projects – which include online resources for the Hamilton Education Program, as well as other digital publications and resources, traveling exhibitions, online course materials (such as videos and interactives), and grant-funded, public library-based programs.


Roles and Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):

  • Supervising the Exhibitions and Public Programs team, as well as external service providers (if/as needed).  
  • Producing high quality programs and materials, based on the history and educational content developed by scholars, specialists, and colleagues such as the Senior Curator, Collection Director, Director of Education, and Executive Editor.
  • Working in a highly collaborative manner, across all the departments at the Institute – such as Development, Marketing and Sales, Finance.
  • Directing all aspects of design – being able to draft and present high level concepts as well as produce production-ready specifications.
  • Playing a key role in managing and further developing the Gilder Lehrman website.
  • Planning projects strategically so that resources are managed efficiently and deliverables are met in a timely manner, while also maximizing the intended objectives.
  • Staying abreast with best practices and related industry standards, as well as emerging technologies and being innovative/able to think outside the box.
  • Building existing and new relationships with potential partner organizations.
  • Ensuring that end-user feedback, metrics, and other evaluation methods are used to measure the impact of programs and materials.


Required Skills / Background:

  • A minimum of 7 years of related experience, particularly with project management and developing digital programs/projects
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • A strong connection to the GLI mission
  • Previous work with K-12 educators a plus
  • Experience with designing and/or building websites a plus
  • HTML and other computer programming knowledge a plus
